In the old Yorkshire livestock markets, a luck penny was a token coin returned to the buyer after a sale had been agreed, symbolising good fortune and prosperity. This custom would have been a familiar sight in York's historic livestock market, which was held in the city centre from the 16^th century before moving outside Walmgate Bar in 1827.
