Best day trips within an hour of York

York provides the ultimate location in which you can explore the rest of Yorkshire (or as its famously called- ‘Gods Own Country’) within just an hour! Beyond the city walls you can take a visit to the breath-taking countryside provided by the North Yorkshire Moor’s and Yorkshire Dales, the surrounding quaint Yorkshire villages, Historical stately homes as well as the charming Yorkshire coastline.

Castle Howard

As Yorkshires most outstanding Stately Home, Castle Howard is always on top of the list to visit. The house itself includes the buildings original interiors dating back to the 18th century. Take a trip around homes surrounding gardens, visit the lakes, fountains and listed buildings which are awaiting to be explored.

Castle Howard is a 30-minute drive by car. The home can also be accessed through an 8-hour day trip from York City Centre. This is provided by Grand Yorkshire Tours on Wednesdays only. The trip also visits Fountains Abbey, Knaresborough Castle, Kilburn as well as a White Horse Walking option. The full day trip is £45 per person.

North Yorkshire Moors and Whitby

The North Yorkshire Moors and Whitby road trip is a perfect start to your stay in Yorkshire, as well as a great opportunity to grab some Fish and Chips on the way!

The North Yorkshire Moor’s provide a vast area of natural beauty. This area locates the ruins of Rievaulx Abbey, the view from Sutton Bank (AKA the “Finest view in England”), traditional Yorkshire Towns and the Coastal town of Whitby.

Visit these within just an hours Car journey from York City centre. Don’t fancy driving? York provides a bus tour on both Mondays and Fridays from York City centre from 1pm.

Harrogate

RHS Garden Harlow Carr in Harrogate has one of the most tranquil gardens in Yorkshire, there’s even 27.5 Hectares of it! Harlow Carr gives you the opportunity to discover the Garden’s History, see Harlow Carr’s glow Winter illuminations or even take part in some natural beauty product making workshops. Harrogate Is also home to Britain’s most beautifully restored Victorian Turkish Baths, discover the unique interior of the baths which date back to the 19th century! Cities by train

York is very popular for its quick trainline access to the larger cities across the UK. Newcastle, Durham, Sheffield and Leeds are the quickest cities to get to from York Train Station!

Hop on a train and be there within just an hour.

Ripon and Fountains Abbey

Fountains Abbey itself is Britain’s LARGEST monastic ruin and is in fact a world heritage site. The National Trust site provides entertainment for all ages. Bring along a picnic and relax surrounded by the beautiful setting and relaxing atmosphere.
